Toshiba Reveals World's New Enterprise Hard Drives with 10.5K RPM Spindle Speed

From X-bit Labs: Toshiba Corp. on Tuesday introduced its new family of enterprise hard disk drives with 10K revolutions per minute (RPM) spindle speed and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 2.0 interface. The new breed of enterprise-class hard drives significantly improve performance compared to previous-gen drives as well as boost capacity to 900GB.

The latest Toshiba ALS13SEB family of enterprise-class hard disk drives are available in 300GB, 450GB, 600GB and 900GB capacities. The new drives have 10500rpm spindle speed, have 64MB of cache memory and utilize SAS 2.0 interface with 6Gb/s transfer speed. The HDDs are based on the latest-generation platters with 552Gb/in2 areal density and 286MB/s internal transfer rate as well as use a dual-stage head positioning actuator, which improves head positioning accuracy by approximately 30%. Dual-stage head positioning actuator It achieves highly accurate tracking in a narrow tracking band, securing stable operation.

The energy consumption efficiency of AL13SEB is approximately 41% higher than that of its predecessor, MBF2600RC, due to lower power consumption by the controller IC and increased storage capacity. Besides, performance of the new drives is up to 32% higher compared to the predecessor.

Volume shipment of Toshiba ALS13SEB will start in August.
