Google Introduces Nexus 7: Nvidia Tegra 3 Tablet for $199

From X-bit Labs: Google on Wednesday introduced its first own-brand Nexus 7” tablet, one of the world’s first slates based on Nvidia Corp.’s Tegra 3 system-on-chip that costs $199. The tablet weighs just 340 grams, but comes with high-resolution screen, high-quality front-facing camera, near field communication (NFC) and other advancements.

“Nexus 7 was built to bring you the best of Google in the palm of your hand. Hang out with up to 10 friends on Google+ using the front-facing camera, browse the web blazingly fast with Chrome and, of course, crank through your emails with Gmail,” a statement by Google reads.

Manufactured by Asustek Computer, the Nexus 7 tablet comes with 7” display with 1280*800 resolution and is based on Nvidia Tegra 3 system-on-chip with four ARM Cortex-A9 cores (+1 low-power A9 core) as well as Google Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” operating system. The device comes equipped with 1GB LPDDR2 memory, 8GB or 16GB internal NAND flash-based storage, 1.2MP front-facing camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, NFC (with Android Beam support), microphone, speaker, accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, GPS, 4325mAh battery and so on.

Google claims that Nvidia Tegra 3 system-on-chip speeds up all the programs compatible with the Android platform, including demanding video games with rich graphics effects. Unfortunately, the Nexus 7 lacks integrated WWAN support, which automatically forces the owner to rely on a nearby smartphone or Wi-Fi access point to connect to the Internet.

Google/AsusNexus 7 comes preloaded with some great entertainment, including the movie "Transformers: Dark of the Moon”, the book “The Bourne Dominion”, magazines like Condé Nast Traveler and Popular Science, and songs from bands like Coldplay and the Rolling Stones. Google also includes a $25 credit to purchase movies, books and more from Google Play, for a limited time.

Nexus 7 is available for preorder today from Google Play in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia, and starts at $199 in the U.S. It will start shipping mid-July.
