Asustek to Outsource Mainboards Production to Cal-Comp Electronics

From X-bit Labs: Asustek Computer reportedly plans to relocate outsourcing of its mainboards from a bunch of smaller makers to three companies. As a result, a part of Asus motherboards will be made by Cal-Comp Electronics, Pegatron and GBM.

Asustek originally outsourced production of its mainboards to Pegatron (a spin-off from Asus), Global Brands Manufacture (GBM) and some smaller ODMs in Southern China, according to DigiTimes web-site that cites local sources. The company now intends to shift the orders from small makers in Southern China to Cal-Comp, a Taiwan-based contract manufacturer.

Not a lot is known about Cal-Comp, but it is claimed to be affiliated with Compal Electronics, a contract maker of notebooks and have manufacturing facilities in Thailand, China, Malaysia, Brazil and Mexico. Potentially, experience in production of highly-complex mainboards for notebooks should result in very high quality of motherboards that it will reportedly produce for Asustek. Besides, production facilities around the globe should enable better logistics for Asus.

Col-Camp is projected to make 5-6 million mainboards for Asustek in 2012. Asus plans to sell 24.5 million motherboards next year.
