Latest Switch Update Allows Save Data Transfers, But...

From PC Mag: One decision Nintendo took when the Switch launched was to not allow save data and user profiles transfers to another Switch, or backed up to a memory card in case something went wrong. It made little sense and the decision has never really been explained. However, with the latest firmware release (4.0.0) transfers are now allowed, but they are far from perfect.

Nintendo setup the Switch to only allow save data to be stored on the internal memory, of which there is 26GB available of the 32GB installed. So if you fill it and need to free up some space, choosing to delete save games means they are lost forever. And let's not forget, the Switch supports huge SDXC memory cards, so saving any amount of data to a card will never be an issue.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's solution to save transfers in firmware 4.0.0 does not solve that problem. As The Verge reports, you can now transfer save data and user profiles from one Switch to another, but performing the transfer leaves the original Switch wiped clean of data. And still, there is no way to transfer this data on to a memory card to act as a backup.

This is sure to continue to frustrate Switch owners who simply want a way of backing up their precious save data. The internal memory inside the Switch isn't getting any bigger, but the number of games played will, and therefore so will the amount of save data created.
